First American edition, first printing hardcover copy of She Came to Stay by Simone de Beauvoir (The World Publishing Company, 1954). Rare vintage copy of this classic of French existentialist literature. A fictionalized account of her open relationship with Jean Paul Sartre when a new sexual partner is introduced as well. Set shortly before World War II. Mild rubbing/scuffing to boards from handing and age. Corners bumped and with some small frayed bits. Binding is firm and spine is straight. Previous owner’s inscription of front endpaper and discoloration near hinges. Some foxing and small stains, mostly towards outer edges of several pages. Pages are otherwise clean and unmarked though tanned. See photos for condition.
